Electricity Price Increases

Electricity costs have increased significantly for families across the country. Rising rates are driving 14 million Americans into debt, causing up to 4 million families to have their power shut off this year, and forcing people to choose between heating their homes and other necessities.

Co-Equal has developed estimates for each congressional district of the change in residential electricity rates and the impact of those changes on household costs. In the average congressional district:

  • Residential electricity rates increased by 7% between October 2024 and October 2025.
  • A family using the average amount of electricity will spend approximately $110 more this year than last year.

Across the 425 districts with available data, residential electricity rates increased in 87% of districts since October 2024. Over one quarter of districts saw rates increase by more than 10%, and over one in seven districts saw increases above 15%.

Note: estimates were released on January 22, 2026.
